Starting the year with plans to rejuvenate through wellness travel and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gocohospitality.com\/wellness-trends-of-2020\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">focus on natural getaways<\/a>, people soon found themselves under global lockdowns following the beginning of a year-long health pandemic. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because of this pandemic, the spa and\nwellness industry has been thrown out of sync, and along with many other\nindustries, the priorities of the consumer have been forever changed. Primarily\ndriven by a heightened need for good immunity and healthy personal wellbeing, the\nwellness world has been shaken up, and a new destiny is in the making,\nrealigned and restarted for a new post-pandemic generation of wellness\ntravellers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Provocative discussions on what the biggest\nwellness trends in 2021 will be are sparking debate across the world and by\npredicting their growth (or decline), we can guess how these trends will impact\nthe spa and wellness industry for years to come. Boosting Immunity <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As staying well became everyone\u2019s de-facto\nwellness practice this year, it\u2019s no surprise that the pandemic has accelerated\na need for boosted immunity. The pandemic has shone a light on preventative\nlifestyle choices and wellbeing enhancing practices, shifting attention towards\nmore results-driven, health-conscious practices. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalwellnesssummit.com\/gws-2020\/media-experts-predict-six-wellness-trends-for-2021\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Global Wellness Institute<\/a> (GWI) predicts that this need to strengthen the immune system will become a significant 2021 wellness trend. We believe it\u2019s already fully in motion. From our GOCO Spas to our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glenivy.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Glen Ivy Hot Springs Resort<\/a> in California, we have seen a significant shift in interest towards treatments and practices that are proven to support immunity and build physical fortitude.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Google Trends data shows breakout searches in phrases such as \u201cimmunity\u201d and earlier this year, in the height of covid, the combined search terms of \u201cfood\u201d and \u201cimmune system\u201d <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/daphneewingchow\/2020\/07\/31\/the-latest-trends-in-immunity-boosting-what-works-and-what-doesnt\/?sh=164725c87945\" target=\"_blank\">increased by 670 per cent<\/a> between February and March 2020. Although much of this popularity can be put down to hype, the immunity-boosting effects of thermal bathing, healthy diets, and functional supplements have been extensively researched and will be shared widely over the coming year. Sustainable and Isolated Experiences <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year we predicted a trend growth in pure\nnature and digital detoxification, driven by environmental concerns and the\nneed to escape polluted urban spaces. The pandemic has increased this desire to\n\u201cescape\u201d with much of the world being stuck at home for months on end under\nlockdowns and travel bans. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We predicted at the start of 2020 before the pandemic emerged that seeking out \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gocohospitality.com\/wellness-trends-of-2020\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">deep nature<\/a>\u201d would become a major wellness trend for the coming years. This is still true, but the motive has somewhat changed. In addition to sustainability, or temporary disconnection from people is being increasingly replaced by nature. Returning to Fitness<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>2020 saw a decline in interest in sports\nand fitness, partly due to pandemic-related business closures and a reduction\nin disposable incomes worldwide. However, as the word \u201crestarts\u201d and people\nreturn to business, a \u201cNew Year Resolution\u201d effect is likely to sweep the\nworld, with large numbers of consumers going back to their regular routines \u2013\njoining gyms and exercising in ways that were once so familiar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Euromonitor International\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.euromonitor.com\/coronavirus-accelerates-demand-for-immunity-and-holistic-wellness\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Voice of the Industry: COVID-19 Survey<\/a> notes that home seclusion in 2020 has proven to show a decline in weight management and wellbeing sales due to a lack of social pressure. Although sales are expected to bounce back over the next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand, there has been an increase in virtual wellness and virtual fitness practice both at home and in the hospitality sector, with live-stream workouts, online yoga classes and even virtual <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/robbreport.com\/travel\/hotels\/montage-providing-on-demand-medical-care-2928410\/\" target=\"_blank\">on-deman<\/a>d medical care both during and after hotel stays. A Focus on Preventative Medicine<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Even before the pandemic, there were many\nconversations about how wellness ties into healthcare and how the two can\nmerge. At GOCO Hospitality, 2020 has seen a surge in projects that focus on\ncombining both the holistic practices of traditional spas with more\nresults-based and preventative medicine services and facilities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The failings of healthcare systems across the world in the face of a pandemic proves that a paradigm shift is required for the future wellbeing of all. More Wellness Through Design<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>From ultra-hygienic spa facilities to\nfully-fledged wellness communities, the lines between everyday life and\nwellness are becoming increasingly blurred. Places of living are beginning to\nincorporate elements of wellness, creating more flexible, resiliently designed\nspaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a recent article by Ingo Schweder, he highlights the need for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.traveldailynews.asia\/new-world-new-designs-resilient-wellness-in-the-wake-of-cov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">design to be smarter overall<\/a>, ensuring our hotels and spas are adaptable for a return to normal use. Touch, after all, is a big part of the spa experience and our pent-up need for personal contact will soon overflow. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Going beyond basic human needs such as water, sanitation, energy, heating \u2013 homes, hotels and public spaces are incorporating air filtration, natural light exposure, circadian lighting, biophilic design, renewable energies, and even <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ikea.com\/th\/en\/new\/the-curtains-with-superpowers-pub0b44b560\" target=\"_blank\">air-purifyin<\/a>g curtains. Mental Wellness and Social Connection<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For many, the pandemic is the first time\nexperiencing extended stress and anxiety caused by factors well outside of our\ncontrol. And for some, the pandemic has amplified much more severe mental\nhealth problems, raising concerns among psychologists who predict that\npsychological issues may linger far longer than the virus itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Physical contact and socialisation are how\nwe feel human. Touch is what triggers endorphins in our brain that makes us\nfeel warm and positive. The mental health impact of social isolation is likely\nto last much longer than the physical health impact. Demand for physical touch\n(if allowed) will grow over the next year, as people seek to focus on their own\nmental wellbeing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the spa and wellness industry, this will\nmanifest itself in a greater demand for stress reduction through treatments and\nexperiences that focus on social connection and togetherness. In addition, we\nexpect therapists will take on a more therapeutic role as they talk with guests\nmore, listen to their thoughts and even provide emotional support to those who\nreach out.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As we step into 2021, one thing is for sure\n\u2013 the post-pandemic wellness enlightenment has seen a new generation of people\nfocused on the industry, centring their lives around personal wellbeing,\nimmunity, and healthy lifestyles.
