Meet Özgür Cengiz, GOCO’s recently appointed Corporate General Manager, a true wellness hospitality professional as well as athlete and fitness professional, who has always been committed to well-being as much as reformulating luxury. He is today a Global Wellness Day ambassador in the Maldives, a member of the Wellness Tourism Associates, as well as a judging committee member of the World Spa & Wellness Awards.
In celebration of World Digital Detox Day this December 10th, Özgür shares his insights about today’s fast-paced, digitally hyperconnected world, as the need for a digital detox has emerged as a crucial concept for maintaining a healthy balance between our online and offline worlds. Özgür says, “The prevalence of smartphones, social media, and an ever-expanding array of digital platforms introduces challenges to our mental and physical well-being. The constant barrage of notifications, the pressure to stay digitally engaged, and the compulsion to document every moment can contribute to stress, anxiety, and a sense of disconnection from the real world.”
He further highlights its benefits and provides tips for a successful Digital Detox and successfully stepping away from smartphones, tablets, computers, and other digital gadgets to reclaim a sense of mindfulness, presence, and balance.
Benefits of Digital Detox:
- Mental Clarity and Focus: A digital detox allows the mind to reset and focus on the present moment, fostering mental clarity and improved concentration.
- Reduced Stress and Anxiety: Disconnecting from the constant stream of information and notifications provides relief from the stressors associated with digital overload.
- Enhanced Sleep Quality: Exposure to screens, especially before bedtime, can disrupt sleep patterns. Digital detox promotes better sleep hygiene and quality.
- Improved Relationships: Breaking free from the digital world allows for more meaningful face-to-face interactions, strengthening personal connections.
- Increased Productivity: A break from digital distractions often results in increased productivity and efficiency in both professional and personal pursuits.
Tips for a Successful Digital Detox:
- Set Clear Boundaries: Establish specific times or days for a digital detox, making it a regular and intentional practice.
- Create Tech-Free Zones: Designate certain areas, such as the bedroom or dining table, as tech-free zones to foster a more mindful and connected environment.
- Explore Offline Hobbies: Rediscover the joy of offline activities like reading, hiking, or engaging in creative pursuits that don’t involve screens.
- Inform Contacts: Let friends, family, and colleagues know about your digital detox plans to manage expectations regarding your response times.
- Utilize Apps for Assistance: Ironically, there are apps designed to help you manage and limit your screen time. Consider using them as tools to support your digital detox goals.
